A Digital Archiving Workshop was held by the ARC-iJAC at SOAS University of London on Feb 20, 2024 The Digital Archiving Workshop comes after the renewal of the MoU between Ritsumeikan University, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, and SOAS University of London, which includes expanding research cooperation in Digital Humanities (DH). The workshop comprised of a talk by Prof. Ryo Akama (Director of the ARC) on the ARC Research Space as a comprehensive digital resesarch space for Japanese arts and culture, and a case study by Dr. Ellis Tinios (Honorary Lecturer, University of Leeds) on transforming research in old Japanese books through the ARC Research Space, followed by a practical session on digitization methods for Japanese materials based on ukiyo-e prints and old Japanese books in the SOAS Library collection. >> Read more. ARC-iJAC Project Spotlights: An Interview with Dr. Pilar Cabañas (The Complutense University of Madrid, Spain) on Digital-Archiving the Complutense Library's Japanese Collection During the course of the ARC-iJAC project of Dr. Pilar Cabañas and her team of the Asia Research Group (GIA) at the Complutense University of Madrid in the past two years, significant progress has been made in the analysis and cataloging of ukiyo-e albums and illustrated books in the Complutense University Library collection. >> Read interview. →UCM collection in the ARC Ukiyo-e Portal Database →UCM collection in the ARC Early Japanese Books Portal Database The International Joint Workshop 'Practices and Challenges of Integrating GIS, VR, Metaverse in Digital Humanities Research' was held on March 25, 2024 The workshop, co-organized by the ARC-iJAC and the Research Center for Chinese Cultural Metaverse in Taiwan (CCMTW), National Chengchi University, in cooperation with the Department of History, Hong Kong Baptist University, was attended by Prof. Shi-Chi Mike Lan (Deputy Director of the CCMTW), Prof. Chi Man Kwong (Hong Kong Baptist University), and Prof. Keiji Yano (Deputy Director of the ARC), amongst others. Besides discussing the future collaboration between the ARC and the CCMTW, the workshop provided a valuable opportunity for an exchange opinions on various topics regarding the use of the metaverse in DH research, including platforms suited for research use, methods for acquiring high-quality 3D data, and the application of digital technologies, such as Geographic Information System (GIS), to the metaverse. >> Read more. Dr. Bincsik, the Diane and Arthur Abbey Curator for Japanese Decorative Arts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET), receives the Marica Vilcek Prize for her curatorial approach to Japanese decorative arts and textiles that highlights the complex interplay of the Japanese and international art market, trade, social, and political circumstances over the past five centuries. Dr. Bincsik earned a Ph.D. from Ritsumeikan University, undertaking research on Japanese lacquerware and other decorative arts, supervised by the ARC Director Prof. Ryo Akama (Graduate School of Letters). An Interview with Prof. Ruck Thawonmas (College of Information Science and Engineering, RU) on Utilizing ARC Database Resources for Research in Game AI Prof. Thawonmas, Head of the Intelligent Computer Entertainment Laboratory (ICE Lab), explains how he utilizes ARC database resources for research in artificial intelligence and Game AI. Kabuki Bromides from the Meiji Era to the Prewar Period have been published in the ARC Shochiku Otani Library Theater Photos Search and Browsing System The Shochiku Otani Library released a digital archive of Kabuki bromides (photographic portraits of Kabuki actors) through the Theater Photos Search and Browsing System developed by the ARC-iJAC. With the online release, users can search and view Kabuki stage photographs from the Meiji era to the prewar period and photographs of famous actors of the past in costume. The Ukiyo-e Collection of the UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA) has been released The release comprises 1,541 ukiyo-e prints held by the UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. We are pleased to welcome Dr. Travis Seifman as Research Manager / Associate Professor to the ARC faculty. Originally from New York, he completed MA degrees in Japanese Studies at SOAS, University of London, and in Art History at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa before earning his Ph.D. in History at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Before joining the ARC, he worked as a postdoctoral Project Researcher at the University of Tokyo Historiographical Institute. Dr. Seifman specializes in Okinawan Studies and researches in particular the embassies dispatched by the Okinawan kingdom of Lūchū (Ryūkyū) to Edo in the 17th to 19th centuries. ARC-iJAC Project Spotlights: An Interview on Natural Language Processing for a Geospatial Exploration of Ukiyo-e Prints & AI-powered Text Recognition of Inscriptions in Ukiyo-e Prints (Project Leader: Dr. Ewa Machotka, Stockholm University) Supported by the ARC-iJAC, the research led by Dr. Ewa Machotka and Dr. John Pavlopoulos (Stockholm University) has pursued the large-scale digital geospatial exploration of places depicted in Japanese early modern ukiyo-e landscape prints through Natural Language Processing (FY 2021). Their follow-up project aims to apply NLP technology to inscriptions on ukiyo-e landscape prints to facilitate a large-scale exploration of textual information featured in those prints (FY 2023). >> Full interview. [Database] Addition of about 600 Items to the Ako City Chushingura Ukiyo-e Database Based on an academic exchange agreement between Ako City and the ARC, a database of Chushingura ukiyo-e held by the city has been built and published online since 2008. Official Start of the Research Project on the 3D Visualization of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Tamaki Shrine (玉置神社) Jointly conducted with Nara Prefecture, the research project to visualize the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Tamaki Shrine--is led by ARC faculty member Prof. Satoshi Tanaka (College of Information Science and Engineering, RU). It involves 3D measurement of the Tamaki Shrine using drones, terrestrial laser scanners, and 360-degree cameras to take multifaceted measurements. >> Read more. Workshop with the Ukiyo-e Woodblock Engraving and Printmaking Techniques Preservation Society at the ARC Co-organized by the ARC-iJAC, a workshop with the Ukiyo-e Woodblock Engraving and Printmaking Techniques Preservation Society (浮世絵木版画彫摺技術保存協会) was held on Feb. 17, 2023. The workshop served to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and opinions concerning ukiyo-e woodblock engraving and printmaking techniques. Seminar Talk by Prof. Koichi Hosoi at Synergy Link Kyoto: AR/VR・metaverse・web3 On March 15, Prof. Koichi Hosoi (College of Image Arts and Sciences, RU), Deputy Director of the ARC, gave a seminar talk at Synergy Link Kyoto, an event centered around AR/VR, the metaverse, and web3. The topic of his seminar talk was The Next Generation Internet World and the Industry (「次世代インターネット世界と産業」). Furthermore, research achievements on creating a Japanese cultural study environment using virtual space-related technologies, such as the metaverse, were showcased at the event. Special Lecture by Prof. Ryo Akama at the DH Conference Materials, Media, and Methods: Digital Issues in East Asian Studies On February 4, Prof. Ryo Akama (College of Letters, RU), Director of the ARC, delivered a special lecture on The ARC Research Space: Aiming at Perfecting a Comprehensive Digital Research Space. Restoring Heian-kyo on a Map of Modern Kyoto: ARC launches the Heian-kyo Site Database & Story Map For restoring Heian-kyo on a map of modern Kyoto and visualizing research outcomes of more than 5,000 excavation sites, the Art Research Center (ARC) and the Institute of Disaster Mitigation for Urban Cultural Heritage (R-DMUCH), Ritsumeikan University, have launched the Heian-kyo Site Database and Story Map. As the lead architect of Nintendo's Family Computer and Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Professor Uemura played a pivotal role in shaping and developing the digital games industry in Japan and worldwide. He had been teaching at Ritsumeikan University since 2004 and was the first director of RCGS. At the same time, he also led research projects at the Art Research Center that focused on the development of preservation methods for digital games, video documentation, and Japanese traditional performing arts. We are profoundly grateful to Professor Uemura for his enormous contribution to Ritsumeikan University and this center.
